Baxter Trail Club

Fear of getting lost on the trails is a big concern for users. Baxter trails are supposed to have levels of signs to guide the hiker.

At the top level are trailhead signs where a trail opens onto a city street. This sign is usually on a vertical 6x6" post with a cap and signs on several sides, a letter or letters which are shown on some maps. It also should identify the crossing street. If the trail continues across the street there will be another sign on the other side with the same letter but doubled.

Away from the street are colored blazes on trees and rocks marking a trail. Each trail having a unique color. The Carolina Thread Trail has white blazes. At major intersections there may be signs identifying the trails and/or the destinations. There are various kiosks which might have system maps and other information.

Or not... the system has gone through iterations of neglect, vandalism and mis-management. In the current state the only trustworthy signs are the trail blazes, except the blue blazes signifying Blue Heron trail which are completely screwy near the twin bridges and can lead to getting into a loop.

Have no fear though as the entire trail system is contained within a few major roads. Keep going and eventually you will come out somewhere. Not counting if you follow the blue blazes and get into a loop.

Needless to say this is very embarassing and rest assured that it is a priority topic just as it has been for several years. Meanwhile download the map, which is mostly accurate, and with a compass may serve you well. (Just don't get a Tates compass because he who has a Tates is lost). A GPS is very useful as are trail software apps for your phone. AllTrails has our trails marked and is easy to use.
